10 Amazing Facts about Colors

Its in everything we touch, taste, smell, and feel. It evokes emotion without asking for prior thought. It can be the focus of our careers, the way we live, the choices we make, and the fun we have. We are all familiar with color and its basic concepts, but did you know??

10. Men and women see the color red very differently

While those of us who are estrogen producers tend to see maroon, cardinal, and crimson, men typically just see red. No varying tones, hues, or shadesjust color-crayon, fire engine red. The explanation is actually quite simple and all falls back on basic DNA. Researchers from Arizona State University found that theres a specific gene that allows us to see and interpret the color red. Women have two X chromosomes, while men only possess one. Because the particular red-seeing gene sits on the X chromosome, it only makes sense that women would have a full understanding of the red spectrum, while our counterparts only have half the pieces to the racy red puzzle. Therefore, ladies, if youre one of those gals who just cannot make a decision when picking out a shade of lipstick, dont put so much pressure on yourself. Its really of very little importance. 09 more after the break...

While China has been leading the trend in skyscrapers for the past decade, architects and designers apparently decided to turn things upside-down for a change. According to CNN, China recently broke ground on the first luxury underground hotel near Shanghai.

Located at the foot of a 100-meter (approximately 328 feet) abandoned quarry at Shanghais Tianmashan, the 380-room resort will have three levels above ground and 16 underground, and will also offer spa services, a sports facility and an underwater restaurant. 08 more images after the break...

After death 10 functions of the body that continues

The body going back in a matter of minutes, hours, days or even weeks after his death. Yes, the article is not intended for people with weak stomachs.

01. The growth of hair and nails

The growth of hair and nails is more of a technical function. The body no longer produces fabrics for the growth of hair and nails, but they both continue to grow and after his death. In fact, the skin loses moisture, and just recedes, exposing the hair and nails seem more compelling long. Since we measure the length of the hair and nails from their ends, to the point where the skin starts, then when the skin is receding, they begin to seem longer. 09 more after the break...

Giant Portrait Visible from Bird's Eye

Mega-Art of the Day: A Face the Size of 2 Football Fields In Amsterdam, Cuban-American artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada has created a piece of urban land art the size of two football fields -- the Netherlands' largest-ever portrait -- and you could walk past without even noticing. But from the air, you could not miss the fragment of a face, crafted from soil, of an anonymous Meso-American human rights activist. Rodriguez-Gerada created the piece to raise awareness for Mama Cash, the world's oldest international women's rights foundation, and their campaign "Vogelvrije Vrouwen - Defend women who defend human rights!"

"The campaign raises awareness to the plight of Meso-American women who are illegally targeted and terrorized for defending human rights in that region," the video of the project announces.

It took only a week for Rodriguez-Gerada and 80 volunteers to build the piece, which uses five miles of rope, seven tons of straw, hundreds of cubic yards of sand and soil, and 1,150 wooden poles. The portrait was completed to mark International Human Rights Day on December 10th; in time, it will fade with wind and rain. The Beautiful Key Monastery India

Key Gompa with Spiti River flowing behind. Photo Link

Key Gompa is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery located on picturesque hilltop at an altitude of 4,166 metres above sea level, close to the Spiti River, in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, India. The monastery has the distinction of being the oldest and the biggest in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh and a religious training centre for Lamas. It is home to around 300 lamas who receive their religious education here.

Key Gompa is said to have been founded by Dromtn (Brom-ston, 1008-1064 CE), a pupil of the famous teacher, Atisha, in the 11th century. This may however, refer to a now destroyed Kadampa monastery at the nearby village of Rangrik, which was probably destroyed in the 14th century when the Sakya sect rose to power with Mongol assistance. Nevertheless, it is believed that the monastery is at least a thousand years old. There was even a celebration of its millennium in 2000 in the presence of the Dalai Lama. 11 more images after the break...

Mega Model

On the way to Liwa it is only a short detour to Sheikh Hamad bin Hamdan al Nahyan's or the Rainbow Sheikh's car museum. I can clearly remember Jermey Clarksons Motor World some 10 years ago and being in awe at the collection that the Sheikh had put together. As you drive through the desert the first thing you notice is the top a pyramid glistening in the distance. Not what you might expect in the UAE but certainly not surprising for this country. It turns out this pyramid houses the car museum. Checking in the UAE off-road guide it is suppose to be open 7 days a week but when our convoy of cars arrived it was decidedly closed. Carol (a British expat who has been here for 17 years) used her jedi mind trick and powers of persuasion on a bored looking Indian chap to let us in. To be honest he would never have been able to disappoint the children we had along for the ride. We were kindly let in and basically had our own private tour of the car museum. It was just great. Top 10 Countries That Disappeared In The 20th Century

New nations seem to pop up with alarming regularity. At the start of the 20th century, there were only a few dozen independent sovereign states on the planet; today, there are nearly 200! Once a nation is established, they tend to stick around for awhile, so a nation disappearing is quite uncommon. Its only occurred a handful of times in the last century. But when they do, they completely vanish off the face of the globe: government, flag, and all. Here then, in no particular order, are the top ten countries that had their moment in the sun but are, alas, no more.

10. East Germany, 1949-1990

Created from the Soviet controlled sector of Germany after the Second World War, East Germany was probably best known for its Wall and its tendency to shoot people who attempted to cross over it. Now, its one (over-reactionary) thing to shoot foreigners who are trying to enter your country illegally, but these were its own people!

Basically little more than a Soviet satellite state, the collapse of the notorious Wall and, with it, the demise of the old Soviet Union brought an end to this failed experiment in Communism, and it was integrated back into the rest of Germany in 1990. Because East Germany was so far behind the rest of Germany economically, however, its reintegration with the west almost bankrupted Germany. Today, however, things are swimming along nicely, thank you. 09 more countries after the break...

I have always had overwhelming passion, and drawing one of them. For a long time I have not made ??a drawing for free time to devote to other things, but three years ago I came back. Unfortunately, I have not studied drawing, and all that I know now, I learned by trial and error, and from reading the various guides on the fine arts. "

Top 10 Deadliest Countries for Journalists

A free and fair press has always been a target for tyrants and criminals. As a result, reporters, photographers, and bloggers can find themselves in harms way while informing us of world and local events. Sadly, this situation has not improved much with time: as of this writing, 960 journalists have been murdered in the last 10 years.

The following are the 10 Deadliest Countries for Journalists, as ranked by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). To humanize the grim statistics, each entry includes a passage describing a late journalist, randomly selected from victim rolls that are entirely too long.

NOTE: CPJ confirms a case only if its reasonably sure a journalist was murdered in direct reprisal for his or her work, killed in combat/crossfire, or killed while carrying out a dangerous assignment. Should you wish to contribute to its efforts, you may donate to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

10. Mexico
Total Murders since 1992: 28

Since 1992, 89% of Mexicos killed journalists were murdered, mostly by drug cartels and criminal gangs operating with near-total impunity. As could be expected from the failing drug war in Mexico, the victims beats typically focused on crime, with some overlap for covering government corruption.

One such victim was Luis Emanuel Ruiz Carrillo, a 21 year old photographer working for La Prensa. He was kidnapped along with his cousin (Juan Gomez Melendez) and a popular TV show host (Jose Luis Cerds Melendez). All three were later found dead with gunshot wounds to the head, next to fresh graffiti warning Stop cooperating with the Zetas. The Zetas are a major drug cartel, and operate with such freedom in Mexico that an armed Zeta walked into the polices active crime scene and moved the bodies to a different location.

Ruiz was still in college, and winner of a journalism award the previous year. He had been on the job eight months. 09 more countries after the break...

Creative Feather Cutwork Chris Maynard

American artist Chris Maynard uses delicate eye surgery tools, miniscule scissors, forceps and sharp scalpels to slice intricate bird-shaped patterns into feathers. Chris Maynard, a resident of Olympia in Washington, USA, made his first feather artwork two years ago in 2011. Since then the 58 year old artist has created 80 pieces which can take up to several days at a time, before mounting them onto frames known as shadowboxes. These stunning works sell between $800 to $2000 a piece.

The best way to see feathers is on birds, says Chris Maynard. But an image of a single feather gives a different perspective of the bird's form, beauty, and function. Nature creates here. I just provide design and the right lighting.

Because most birds lose (molt) and renew their feathers about once a year, single feathers are easy to use and photograph without harming the bird. Most pictures here are of molted feathers. Many of these photographed feathers were borrowed from museums, zoos, and private aviaries. 09 More images after the break...

10 Unusual Volcanic Craters

Craters of extinct and passive volcanoes are circular depressions in the ground caused by ancient volcanic activities. It is typically a basin, circular in form within which occurs a vent (or vents). Because of their inaction these craters are mostly suffered many changes caused by atmospheric and human factors. Unusual and beautiful volcanic cones, traces of human activity, lush vegetation and colorful crater lakes are the main reasons why many tourists visit these extraordinary destinations.

01. Diamond Head, Hawaii USA

Diamond Head is the name of a volcanic tuff cone on the Hawaiian island of O?ahu. Its name was given by British sailors in the 19th century, who mistook calcite crystals embedded in the rock for diamonds. This crater is a defining feature of the view known to residents and tourists of Waikiki alike.

The volcanic tuff cone is a United States State Monument. While part of it serves as a platform for antennas used by the U.S. government and is closed to the public, the crater's proximity to Honolulu's resort hotels and beaches makes the rest of it a popular destination. 24 more images after the break...
